Use cunning and wisdom to choose your commands. Gain experience, weapons and armor as you battle your way through the world. Rest if you must.Search out the Dragon-lord's lair and face your destiny. In this role-playing adventure you are the Dragon Warrior!***"Dragon Quest" has its roots in the Ultima series, but rumour has it that Ultima was too complicated and complex for the Japanese videogaming market. So Dragon Quest, with its simple but very addictive structure, was an instant hit and the start for the most successfull RPG series in Japan. And it is pretty good. Not as non-linear and confusing than many early CRPGs. Nice graphics and music as well.***Product Number: NES-DQ-CAN NES-DQ-USA
Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version (1986) used passwords but the US (1990) and Canadian versions used battery backed save RAM
A pen and paper RPG called Dragon Quest had already been published in the United States. For copyright reasons, the name Dragon Warrior was used. However, it turns out there was also Dragon Warriors RPG in existence at the time.

The English version was translated and published by Nintendo and [u]strictly[/u] uses Early Modern English [i]in conversational dialogs[/i]. Often mistakenly called King James English or Shakespearian English, but those styles were in fact derived from the Early Modern style (King James style also borrows extensively from Middle English). Early Modern English is in fact a bit more understandable than King James or Shakespearian English, for those who understand the contemporary Modern English of the late 20th century. The Japanese names for the characters and locations were changed into English names that better fit with the Early Modern English and a northern Europeanish location. The changes are influenced by the Arthurian Legends. The Nintendo version also made significant improvement in graphics and game mechanics. The number of menus was reduced. The protagonist could face multiple directions (instead of south only). Direction of talking and actions was automatically based on the direction the protagonist was facing rather than needing to be manually specified. Shorelines looked a bit like breaking waves instead of abrupt hard edges into sea water.

Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu  Konami1986This is the first console game in the long-running Goemon series (only preceded by the arcade game [game=#3834]Mr. Goemon[/game], which gameplay-wise has not much to do with the Famicom version). You play the thief Goemon, some kind of Japanese Robin Hood, based on a real historical figure. In each stage you have to find three passes, which opens the gate to the next of the thirteen stages. Passes can be found in hidden underground passages, be bought in shops (amongst other useful extra items), or be found in first-person-view mazes. Money can be collected from slain enemies or hidden coin chests. Technically the game is very good and rather advanced for a mid-1986 title. I believe this was the very first 2Mbit cartridge and it shows with many different graphical environments. This game would eventually start a very successful game series, at least in Japan. However, the game does not yet feature the many hilarious characters and situations of the later Goemon games.***The Japanese title translates to something like 'Go Goemon! Tricking Adventure'. Karakuri means to trick or take a person by surprise (usually through mechanical means), but a karakuri ningyo (typically just called a karakuri) is also a type of Japanese puppet. The title may be a pun. Goemon is essentially the player's puppet during the game; however, the character of Goemon is also a thief (based on a real person), and thus his role in life is to trick people and steal things.

Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu  Namco1986[media=youtube]3mt3sCrwPss[/media]***In Valkyrie no Bouken Namco mixed the fighting of [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] with the scrolling overworld of [game=#7747]Dragon Quest[/game]. The game features many other aspects of RPGs of its time, like shops or dungeons and magical abilities. At its time the game was quite successful and Japanese players liked it, but nowadays you immediately recognize several issues that make this game actually far less playable than both of the before mentioned games. The inventory is limited to only eight items. Later in the game it is nearly impossible to stack a couple of needed extra potions to survive the harder dungeons. Resting in an inn is too expensive. It costs nearly all your money to just fill up your hitpoints. Enemies often approach the player in unfair ways. There are no NPCs in the game and thus there are no hints to the very few but also very nasty puzzles. At least in that way non-Japanese players are not in a disadvantage here. Graphics and sound are merely average. labelimageminimize
Super Star Force: Jikuureki no Himitsu  Tecmo1986"Super Star Force" mixes classical vertical-scrolling shooting action mixed with Zelda-like dungeon exploration parts. In order to defeat the endboss you have to collect "Time Stones" from dungeons which are hidden in different time zones. With your space fighter you fly through the different time zones and shoot lots of enemies. With shooting down enemies you earn time pieces which can be used as currency in shops to upgrade your ship/man and buy extra items that are needed in some parts of the game. Time pieces also work as life bar, each hit by enemies reduces your amount of time pieces. You also have to find clues how to open up some dungeons. Often you have to shoot a certain object in a past time zone to open up a dungeon or hint in a later time zone. I liked the game more than the very similar [game=#176988]Ginga Denshou: Galaxy Odyssey[/game] that was released at the same time for the Famicom Disk System. Super Star Force has ok graphics and plays well. Although sometimes it is rather difficult and without a walkthrough you will hardly find some of the secrets that are needed to finish the game. labelimageminimize
Milon's Secret Castle  Hudson Soft;Nintendo (Hudson Soft)1986
[100]***In "Milon's Secret Castle" you have to make your way up a castle to get rid of the evil that infests it and took the princess prisoner. Well, this game is not an ordinary platform game, mainly because about everything of importance is hidden. With your bubble attack you can not only shoot monsters, but also destroy blocks, many of them containing money but some of them also give access to hidden shops, hidden keys and doors and open up other parts of the game. Extra items from shops can and must be bought with the collected money. Combine this with a not particularly easy platform gaming part and it makes this a rather frustrating and difficult game. Also when hit by enemies you are not invulnerable for a second, often resulting in multiple hits at once. Today this would be considered bad game design. At the time of its release you could argue it added depth to the game and "Milon's Secret Castle" was in good company with other unfair NES games. If you take the frustrating part aside (e.g. playing with a walkthrough) it is a unique platformer with a puzzling maze-like level design.***1986-11 for Famicom ("Meikyuu Kumikyoku" is used in official documentation)

Aigīna no Yogen: Balubalouk no Densetsu Yori  Vic Tokai1986Aigiina no Yogen is a strange platform game. Between the different levels/dungeons you walk around on an overworld. Once in a dungeon the perspective changes to side-view and you have to kill a certain amount of enemies until a ladder appears to the next room and so on. Monsters are killed by activating stationary weapons which appear when you jump against blocks with your head. The game is really frustrating. The controls are a big issue. You can make normal and high jumps. But high jumps fail so often because of the unresponsive controls it ruins everything. And if the game wouldn't be hard enough because of that, the developers had you find five star fragments throughout the dungeons, which are in very secretly hidden rooms. And why they made the overworld so frustrating as well I don't know. Here you also have to walk on exact spots to trigger events like earthquakes which open up the way again. labelimageminimize
Takeshi no Chousenjou  Taito1986[media=youtube]j_RH518LyOk[/media]***Now the gameplay design in this game is most bizarre. You are playing a guy (I think representing the Japanese actor Takeshi Kitano himself) who goes on a search for a big treasure. You start in your home city where you have to prepare some things to undergo a trip to a remote pacific island where the treasure is hidden. Some of the game's puzzles are extremely unusual and unfair. Best example is when you get a non-readable treasure map and to make it readable the simplest! solution is to put it in water and wait between five and ten minutes. If you press a single button before the five minutes are over then it won't work. Or the laughable karaoke sequences that make use of the build-in microphone of the second Famicom controller. The action sequences are also more or less stupid and unfair. There is a hangglider shooter sequence where you can move your glider down, left and right but not up. Extremely difficult. This game put in so much unfair and nonsense gameplay that it is often regarded as a prime example of what Japanese people call a "kusoge" (shitty game). With the difference that Taito in this case exactly wanted this game to be unfair and impossible to solve without a walkthrough. It even makes fun about the player who completes the game by saying that you shouldn't take this game so seriously. Well, with a walkthrough the game is at least enjoyable in a sense that you always wonder that nothing makes sense and what the game designers smoked when they came up with some puzzles and curiosities. Not every game is as memorable as this. The graphical representation of the starting city is quite ok. Music is much too repetitive. labelimageminimize
Sherlock Holmes: Hakushaku Reijou Yuukai Jiken  Towa Chiki (Another)1986[media=youtube]2OTPWbpYEQc[/media]***I don't know what the goal is in this game. You run around in different British cities and try to find clues about something I don't know about. And actually I couldn't care less, because the game is bad, one of the worst games for the Famicom I have played so far. So, there you have your top-view running around in the city scenes, where you kick and stab innocent looking citizens to gain money. Additionally there are locations where the game switches to side-view platform scenes, which have terrible controls. And everytime! you beat one of the numerous evil looking humans the game stops and gives you a text message which might be some kind of hints. And everything in this game, all items and clues are very well hidden. Yes, I admit that many old games had things very well hidden on the brink of unfairness, but at least they had acceptable controls. The music is an extremely annoying high-pitched something. So eventually (if you happen to play this game for longer than 5 minutes) you might buy a trip to the next city for more unplayable action goodness. I can't see anything positive about this game. labelimageminimize
Deadly Towers  Brøderbund;Irem (Lenar)1986You are young Prince Myer, setting out to defend the ancient kingdom of Willner. Rubas, King of Devils, has built a castle in the north and is preparing to invade your kingdom. Ringing magic bells, he is calling out an army of the most terrifying creatures known (or unknown) to man. To defeat Rubas, you must journey to his palace and burn down his seven bell towers. On your quest, you will collect weapons and armor to defend yourself against rats and crawlers; bats, snakes and slime; demons, dragons and more. You'll need every ounce of help you can get. For you are all that stands between your people and the forces of darkness.***Deadly Towers is a mixed-bag. The gameplay is similar to [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game], with the perspective being a bit more 3D-ish. For a game released in 1986 it looks rather advanced. The graphics are nice, the music is good and the game is huge. The game has major flaws however. Some of them are not uncommon for an early NES game. Many necessary items are very well hidden in non-obvious spots. The difficulty level is too high. In this game the beginning is even the hardest part of the game. Being badly equipped you have barely a chance againts the many monsters. Sometimes when you run over a certain spot you are teleported into a dungeon. And you cannot immediately leave the dungeon, until you find the exit. Making things worse, the dungeons are huge 16x16 screen mazes with many difficult monsters. And only in these dungeons you can find shops where you can buy some better equipment to survive the final seven towers where seven bells are hidden, which you must find and destroy in order to challenge the end boss. Now with a walkthrough and cheat at hand I could avoid the biggest frustration, but I understand people who say that this game is a game design disaster.***"Mashou" is used in official documentation.

Journey through this 3D looking game to collect the evil magic bells from the 7 bell towers and burn them in the sacred flame.

Mashō literally means "Evil Bell" an is a pun of 魔性 which means meaning "devilishness." It was supposed to be titled "Hell's Bells," in English but this title qualified for Nintendo's unwritten censorship rules. Oddly, there are Holy Crosses shown all through the game and the game is pretty blatant that God himself has personally asked the game's protagonists to complete this quest.

This game has a very long crawl screen of text. Possibly the longest crawl of any game previous and I can't think of a longer since. The text mentions that the castle explored in the game is actually under construction. This can thinly justify the level structure.

[Zerothis]***I'm surprised to find this game listed on many 'worst games of all time' lists. Ya, its insanely hard. And true, the character and enemies moves in plain 2D even though the enemies are (not) placed in a weird pseudo 3D non-existent environment. And, I'll admit, generally hidden/invisible entrances are used for required main levels instead of just secret bonus areas. And, ok, 20 hit points for the first enemy encountered in the game that isn't even a boss and doesn't even have a name, and doesn't even have a face, or a brain, or limbs, or multiple colors, is a bit excessive. Oh and instead of finding a way to the remotest part of the dungeons, grabbing the treasure and being teleported out, the player is teleported into the remotest part of the insanely complex dungeons, loses treasures, and must find their own way out. It could be worse, imagine if it had no continue option (which is easily exploited btw. [spoiler]Start the game, die, then change the first two letters of your continue password to "EF" or "FE".[/spoiler] Wimpy). [b]However, I like it for the challenge[/b], I find the false 3Dishness very retro (by 1986 standards), in a good way. This game proceeded [gameid=9176]The Legend of Zelda[/gameid] and in many ways its better, imo. The size of dungeons and the order of their 'completion' are superior. Dragon Quest II: Akuryou no Kamigami  Enix (Chunsoft)1987
[30]***Though the time of his deeds has long faded, still the name of Erdrick commands respect among even the greatest of warriors. Stories of his lineage are legendary throughout the land and have been retold through the ages in the most remote villages and townships. Long ago a young man, who was a descendant of Erdrick, saved the Kingdom of Alefgard by defeating the dreaded Dragonlord. The young man came to this land accompanied by Princess Gwaelin. Together they built TORLAND.***Long ago, a descendant of Erdrick the Great defeated the Dragonlord and recovered the mystical ball of light in Alefgard. Under the rule of his children and their descendants there was prosperity throughout the land for generations. One day, however, this peace was shattered by the wicked Sorcerer Hargon. Now it is time for you to claim your birthright as the Prince of Midenhall, for Erdrick's blood also flows through your veins. With the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke by your side, you are about to embark on a most adventurous journey. Use your strength and cunning for you are about to enter the world of Dragon Warrior II.***Bigger and more non-linear than the first Dragon Quest. Now you have three characters in your party. There ist still very much time spend with leveling your characters via random monster fights. Perhaps the most difficult title in the whole series.***Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. The Japanese version used passwords but the US version used battery backed save RAM.

In keeping with Nintendo's policy of removing 'religious' references from American versions of their games, crosses on churches were replaced with the Star of David and coffins with crosses on them were replaced with ghosts. ?.

Woody Poko  dB-SOFT1987"Woody Poko" originated on Japanese homecomputers as are many of db-Softs Famicom games. It is a platform game, including several typical action-adventure elements like item shops and non-linear levels. The game itself is nice, but a bit confusing. One of those games that I will surely play again as soon as there is a good walkthrough or at least a map available. labelimageminimize
Mirai Shinwa Jarvas  Taito1987"Mirai Shinwa Jarvas" is an Action-RPG in a similar fashion as the better known [game=#7875]Hydlide[/game] or [game=#39995]Ys[/game] games. The game is considered to be rather bad and thats right. It makes many things wrong. The fighting is nearly unplayable, the world is large and empty, talking to NPCs is hard to undertake because of the bad menu-system and I always thought the game leaves me alone about what to actually do. I think it is about gathering fame and soldiers and finally conquering castles. Sounds interesting, but I only felt like being in a big overworld not knowing what to do. The graphics are actually a stronger part of the game and the game even feature side-scrolling scenes. I have the impression that Taito tried to offer a lot with this game, but went wrong with the execution of their ideas. Well, it is one of those games that I will possibly play again in the future when a proper walkthrough appears. Maybe my opinion about will change then. labelimageminimize

[49]***Half a year after Nintendo released Kid Icarus in Japan for the Famicom Disk System, they brought the game to the west for the NES. The game is of course nearly the same as the Famicom Disk Version with a few differences. Instead of saving your game on disk a password system was implemented. The NES version als features weaker sound effects and the last shooting-type level a bit more convenient control-wise. The rest from the Famicom Disk System version also applies to the NES version. It is a quality-wise good game, a mixture of [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game], [game=#7949]Zelda 2[/game] and [game=#8012]Metroid[/game] with nice graphics and music but overly high difficulty level.***In a time when men and gods lived in harmony, the kingdom of Angel Land was ruled by two goddesses: Palutena, the Goddess of Light, and Medusa, the Goddess of Darkness. Unlike Palutena, Medusa despised all humans and enjoyed destroying their crops and turning them into stone. One day, Palutena decided to punish the evil Medusa and banished her after turning her into a hideous monster. But Medusa would not go without a fight. She created an army of monsters and evil spirits and captured Palutena. Players play as Pit, a young angel trapped in the Underworld, and Palutena's only hope. They use a magical bow to retrieve the Sacred Treasures, defeat Medusa and restore peace to Angel Land.***This game was released alongside Metroid. They share similar graphics and even have a crossover character. Both games were also the first to use a password feature. The game was made in 1986 by Nintendo.

[27]***The NES version of the first Zelda game appeared roughly a year after the Famicom Disk System version and is of course nearly identical. Fine graphics and music, a huge overworld and many tricky dungeons. Complexity combined with good playability makes it a genre defining masterpiece and started one of the most popular game series ever. The Japanese cartridge version was released way after the original release in February 1994, most likely due to the fact that even in Japan nobody used a Disk System anymore at that time. It was also one of the very last Famicom releases.***Gather the Triforce Fragments, collect the weapons needed to defeat Gannon (its says "GANNON" in the game).Rescue the princess. Then do it again (1st Quest, 2nd Quest). This is an appropriately difficult action-adventure with minor puzzle elements and maze like dungeons. There are enemies on nearly every screen to be dispatched by sword, boomerang, arrow, bomb, flame, recorder (flute), and/or magic.

Originally released 1986 on the Famicom Disk System, the game was "ported" to cartridge and brought to the western world a year later. In 1994 a cartridge version was created for Japan also.

Suggested simple instructions:
Kill anything that moves; burn, blow up, feed, and/or steal anything that doesn't; in proper order.

You can stop and save your game at anytime without dying. Press start to go to the sub-screen menu. Then on controller 2 press ↑+A. This is often incorrectly regraded as a 'secret'. But in reality, its written in the game instruction booklet.

North American (English), European (English), and Japanese (Japanese based with English text also) versions of this cartridge were officially published in 1994. It has been unofficially translated, via ROM patches, to the follow languages:
Croatian, Danish, Dutch, Esperanto, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, Lojban, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Out of the NES versions, SNES versions, and this one, this one is probably my fave. The gameplay is amazing, the challenge is kick-ass, the storyline is pretty sweet, and it will keep you glued to your NES from start till finish. Trust me, this one is as good as the N64 version. Even though it doesn't have fancy graphics, the gameplay is unlike any other. You won't be disappointed!!!!

Zombie Hunter  Hi-Score Media Work (Lenar)1987"Zombie Hunter" is a side-scrolling Action-RPG and plays similar as the side-scrolling action parts of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game]. Killing monsters will give you experience points and a chance of a chest with special items or upgrades to already existing armor and weapons. The game is very linear and has no overworld or other NPCs to talk to (except some shops in each level where you can buy/sell items). However, you can walk forth and back in each level in order to grind some levels before you encounter more difficult enemies. I think the problem is that the game doesn't play very well and becomes much too repetitive in the later levels. Besides that it is a quite difficult game. Activision planned to release the game in the U.S. as "Zombie Master", but eventually cancelled it. labelimageminimize
Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.***[media=youtube]5VuU2rvPmGI[/media] labelimageminimize

Each of the family members has special abilities giving them advantages in certain parts of the labyrinth (e.g. the father can move blocks, the little sister jumps very high etc.). While the graphics, controls and music are not bad, this game has a huge problem. It is incredibly confusing, complex and difficult. Dead ends, secrets, a ton of unfair spots and a labyrinth design that lets you cry for a good hint book - and even then it is still frustrating.

Fantasy Zone  Sunsoft1987The Famicom-port of Fantasy Zone positively surprised me. I didn't expect it to be as colorful and playable as the Master System version, but it is. And it is fast. Sometimes too fast. With full speed boost I more often flew into enemies than I wanted. Two other points that are worth to mention are that it is strange to see a Sega arcade game on the Nintendo Famicom and I wondered how Sunsoft got the license to do it. The other point is that this game can easily be confused with the US NES release from Tengen. But they are actually completely different programs (besides the fact that they are of course very very similar due to both being rather faithful arcade conversions). labelimageminimize

The game features eight levels with an overworld/castle and a complex maze, mostly containing an important object, which is needed for further progress. Kyonshiizu 2  Taito1987Kyonshiizu 2 is based on the rather silly HongKong martial arts/horror/comedy movie-series "Mr. Vampire" and not a sequel to another game. The goal is to defeat several evil demons which are hidden in some towers around a city. In the city itself you are talking to people, buy stuff. All with the goal to receive a costume with which you can enter the evil realms inside the towers. The action sequences are side-scrolling beat'em up sequences. Since there is no translation of this game available it is hardly playable for non-Japanese people. From the bit I have played and seen on videos the game does not look promising and I wonder what the 2Mbit on the cartridge were used for. The adventure/RPG part of the game seems to be ok, but nearly only takes place around the same town. The action sequences are not well playable and features only a very limited number of enemies. All the towers are graphically the same again and again. Rating the game is hard due to the language-barrier, but even if a fan translation and proper walkthrough should appear some day I will likely not go back to this game.***The cartridge has a battery door to replace the Save RAM battery when it eventually dies.***In this game you wander around a town, talk to people and buy stuff like in a typical RPG. But then you have to get through beat'em up style sections, fighting against enemies. It´s really hard to understand what´s going on if you don´t know Japanese.
It is based on a Taiwanese martial arts movie.

-5 year lithium battery saves score and play position
-Exciting animated graphics
-Full sound effects
-Multi-character interplay
-100 hours of game time

For harder challenges, you can change teams or create your own characters. Memory can score and save three games individually.***Well, this is a good port of the third Ultima game. Looks brighter and friendlier than the computer versions, but has the same depths in gameplay. On the other hand I think that Ultima became really good with the fourth game. The third one is a bit on slow side without the great story and virtue topic of the later games. Dungeons look all the same and are pretty complicated. Fights take a bit too long, because you have to move each character on a mini battle map and it's tedious after a while. In the end its a game that has more depths like Dragon Quest style games, but the extra elements are also not really fun to play with today.

[49]***Unlock doors of legend on your journey through Faxanadu.
You are the elves' last hope. Outside the town walls lurk monsters with the power to destroy anything in their path. Inside the walls, water and time are running out. Soon the ancient elf town of Eolis will vanish into eternity.
Only you can save Eolis. No one else dares to venture beyond the walls, onto the World Tree, where towns and fortresses precariously await the whims of fate at the hands of the Evil.
You are searching for the water source and for an antidote to the poison that makes the water undrinkable. To find them you'll need gold and food and magic, speed with a sword...and luck.
Every town holds a new mystery, every fortress a new danger. Merchants will sell you magic and valuable tools, but it's up to you to figure out what you need. Long, secret mantras help you slip through the mists, but will you survive the next challenge?
This is Faxanadu, the legend, the adventure-the incredible journey on the World Tree.***

It's actually quite a different game and resembles [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-7949-Zelda+II+The+Adventure+of+Link]Zelda II[/url] quite a lot. Faxanadu was the third game of the "Dragon Slayer" game series appearing on the Famicom and it was by far the best one so far, beating [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-7944-Legacy+of+the+Wizard]Legacy of the Wizard[/url] and [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-159602-Romancia]Romancia[/url] in terms of fair gameplay. Faxanadu is relatively linear and not as unforgiving as the former titles. I also liked the graphics. They lacked a bit in colors, but are detailed and quite atmospheric.***

Graphics and music were very good, you could choose between plenty of character classes and the game told a good story. Today the random encounter rate with all those monster fights might seem too high, but this was a normal thing with early RPG's.***Published in Brazil, catalog number "NES-FF-BZL" is unconfirmed.

Trivia:
In the original Japanese version, Link's grave could be found. Nintendo published both Dragon Warrior and its rival [, this game Final Fantasy] in the USA. They changed a grave to Erdrick's, a hero from the Dragon Warrior game. Later editions for other systems restored Link's grave.***The NES game that started it all. Although heavily hyped by Nintendo at the time of its release, nobody could ever have predicted the soaring heights the series would eventually reach in the minds and hearts of gamers. This game probably did more to advance the cause of console RPGs than perhaps any other - which is surprising in retrospect, as the first FF is a stunningly average game. It has virtually none of the depth or character development that later games - including the two other Japanese-only Famicom/NES releases - would later make the hallmark of the FF name. The combat system is nice, but there's better out there for the NES. Plus, it gets annoying after a while, since you're having encounters at just about every step, especially in the later dungeons. All in all, look at the first Final Fantasy as the grade-schooler's notebook sketchings that eventually lead her to become a great artist.

Relesed December 18, 1987 by Square in Japan and 1989 by Nintendo in the US.***Yeah sure, it looks like crap by today's standards, the story is almost non-existant, there is zero character development, the music is... well... it's an NES for god's sake! But this was my first Japanese RPG (you have no idea how long I had to save my allowance for this) and nothing you say can make me hate it. NOTHING!

There is a really good Final Fantasy One hack called [i]Final Fantasy ++[/i] and its sequel [i]Final Fantasy ++ World of Chaos[/i]. If you're a fan of the game, it's definately worth checking out.

It features:

* Redone graphics. (Mostly ripped from later games in the series.)
* Redone enemies. (Many are new; some are returning enemies with new properties.)
* Redone magic spells. (Magic is now divided into White, Black, and Time Magic.)
* Redone weapons and armor. (Some armors now increase evasion rather than lowering it!)
* Redone maps. (Most are similar to the original game’s; some are totally new.)
* Redone character class system. (See Read Me.txt for details.)
* Two new pieces of music. (Adapted from Final Fantasy 4.)
* Some other relatively minor stuff.

Kamen Rider Club: Gekitotsu Shocker Land  Bandai (Tose)1988"Kamen Rider Club" is the first videogame adapton of the Tokusatsu-style Japanese tv and metaseries "Kamen Rider". It is a strange mixture of platform game with RPG elements. Encounters with enemies often lead to a special combat mode where you have to face the enemy in a one-on-one battle, which consists of pressing a button as fast as possible. You can also use several tools to aid in fights. Winning gives XP and eventually you level up and become stronger. Most of the time however you will try to manage the platform levels themselves. The first three levels are tied to a certain Kamen Rider protagonist, in the further stages you can switch between your three main protagonists at will. Their ablities to run, jump and climb are slightly different from each other, so you must make good use of them in certain situations. The game is surprisingly long and takes a couple of hours to finish. Sounds all good, doesn't it? Well, now here is the problem. The controls, especially the jumping are bad, really bad. The worst is the fact that once you hit an wall or brick above you with your head (and that will happen often) you head comically flattens somehow and for some seconds you are not able to climb walls in that way. And wall-climbing is needed as much as jumping in this game. Due to the design and controls you feel like making progress very very slowly and always interrupted by those RPGish fight scenes. With better controls this could have been really good, but it turned out to be infuriatingly frustrating at times. labelimageminimize

* Gamble on monster battles at the Fight Rings.

* Visit over 40 castles, towns, villages and shrines.***The third game in the "Dragon Quest" series is a big improvement compared to its two predecessors. Your party now consists of four heroes, whose classes you are free to choose. The game is bigger, has a better storyline with a legendary story twist towards the end of the game and has some memorable places and scenes like the phantom ship. The job changing system is also very innovative and gives extra motivation to build your "ultimate" party. As this is an console RPG of the 80's the leveling-up process still consists mainly of fighting random monster encounters. The time you spend leveling is not as long as in its predecessors but its still there and can become a bit tedious. The graphics stay basically the same as before. Here and there a few animations more, but nothing spectacular. The same can be said about the music.***A popular urban myth says that there is a law in Japan that forbids the release of DragonQuest game on a schooldays. While this is sometime attributed to that fact that DragonQuest III caused a huge disruption when release on a schoolday, the fact is that Enix voluntarily decided to not release subsequent DragonQuest games on schooldays before the law went into effect.

The game has 14 full length songs available in the album, Dragon Quest III ~And Into the Legend...~ Remix Symphonic Suite by Sony Records in 1996. Not eligible for a Grammy due to the snubbing of Videogames as an art form.

Chronologically the third game published, and marked "III", but the storyline precedes the first DragonQuest game. It also is set in a different world than its timeline sequels. This world's geography largely parallels Earth and cities vaguely represent different cultures of earth. However it is clearly not earth and while it adheres to an early medieval technology level, it references Earth cultures that span many thousands of years apart from each other.
[Zerothis]***Dragon Warrior is called Dragon Quest in Japan. This game is a must-have. A great classical hero-who-saves-the-world story. There is a great remake of this game for the SNES, but it's only available to Japanese readers, at least until someone translates it.

Ikari Warriors II: Victory Road  K Amusement Leasing;SNK (Micronics)1988"Ikari Warriors II" is just as badly playable as its predecessor with stiff controls being the biggest problem. The levels are just much shorter, which is a big plus in this case. Graphics are a mixed bag. Looks ok on still screenshots and the sprites are bigger than before, but the sprites are not well animated and the color scheme of the background graphics is strangely monotonous. The story wins a 'plain stupid' award with the heroes being transported into the far future to rescue Earth from aliens. Well, doesn't matter anyway.***When we last saw Paul and Vince, they had saved the Colonel and were about to head for home in a special plane given to them by the General. Elysion  Tokyo Shoseki (SystemSoft)1988"Elysion" is a run-of-the-mill Action-RPG game. At the start of the game you choose one of four different characters with different stats regarding HP, Magic and weapon use. Deep Dungeon III: Yuushi Heno Tabi  Square (Hummingbird Soft)1988"Deep Dungeon III", similar to its both predecessors, is a difficult old-school dungeon crawler RPG. More dungeons, more towns and instead of a single character you control a party of four characters. Standard dungeon crawler elements everywhere. A bit more story or surprising elements would have been good. In every regard an average game for fans of that particular RPG sub-genre only.***Deep Dungeon III: Yūshi he no Tabi is the third installment in the Deep Dungeon series and the first to be released on the Famicom. This is the first Deep Dungeon title to offer the player a world to explore spanning multiple dungeons and multiple towns. It also allows the player to create their own party with up to three companions in addition to the hero character, with a choice of ranger, magician or priest for each character. Though the player can dismiss a character once the game has started, they will only be able to replace that character if they meet another pre-created playable character in one of the dungeons. However, the game will still end as soon as the protagonist "swordsman" character is defeated. This game retains the player-adjustable level-up stats from the first game, as well as the feature that removes randomized encounters if the player is at a significantly higher experience level than needed for their current location. One exclusive and rather annoying feature of this game engine is that sometimes the player character will fumble (remove) their equipped weapon, wasting that character's turn. If the player wishes to re-arm their weapon, it will cost the player another turn. This is the only game in the series to award the player money (Gold) when defeating enemies. All other games will force the player to re-enter maps to collect respawning chests for money or items (for resale) if they want to gold farm.

SQF-FY ファイナルファンタジーII/Final Fantasy II published 1988-12-17 by Square in Japan.
Final Fantasy II: Dark Shadow Over Palakia was going to be the title of the USA publishing.
MSRP: 6,500円

This is the second game in Square's popular Final Fantasy series. It was released only in Japan (the Japanese Final Fantasy IV was released as Final Fantasy II in the U.S.). The game emphasizes the storyline more than the first game: four young refugees from a conquered kingdom join a rebel movement in hopes of striking back at their oppressors. Players must engage in conversion collecting key words to ask key people about in order to advance the plot. Character's have identities and personalities unlike in FF1. This is emphasized by character portraits of all the player characters, the fact that there are many player characters that come and go as their role in the plot dictates, and the frequent use of player characters' names by NPC's. Familial relationships between characters are also frequently noted. The graphics aren't terribly advanced beyond FF1's, but the experience system was completely revamped. Instead of gaining EXP and levels, the heroes gain points in the abilities that they use. Attacking a lot increases strength. Getting hit a lot increases defense. Casting the Fire spell a lot increases the spell's power. Using an axe increase axe fighting ability. An interesting concept (usually reserved for computer RPGs), but one that makes for a difficult game (as long as the endemic exploits of this game's system are not utilized). A translation to English patch for the ROM is available.

This is the Final Fantasy volume that introduced Chocobos and Cid

[Zerothis]***Sequel of the successful Final Fantasy. It has a really good storyline and a new system where you have to improve abilities/skills by using them, instead of gaining XP and levels in the traditional way. Still a good RPG, but I really didn't like the way the skill system seduced you to find ways to make leveling up easier by e.g. hitting your own party members. It somehow ruined the whole pace of the game.

Little Red Hood  Joy Van;Sachen;HES (Thin Chen Enterprise)1989This game might just be better than [game=#7706]Hell's Bells[/game]. I'd give it 4.6 stars if I could.***One of the only NES game that requires to have any other game inserted into its cartridge to work.***From the game box :

"[i]This is no ordinary forest, then again, this is no ordinary LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. She can sure throw a kick and let me tell you, she needs it to get to grandma safely.
The forest is filled with wicked goblins, snakes, scorpions, bears, and of course THE WOLF. Team up with her faithful dog and help LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD collect fruit, candy and magic potions so that che can fight these evil beasts and save grandma.[/i]"***Joy Van offered this game to American Video Entertainment for publishing but they decided not to.
HES Published the cartridge in Australia in two versions. One was a piggyback cartridge, requiring a licensed game be plugged into the back in order to satify the lockout chip. The other was functionally identical but has a cartridge slot dongle on a cable to plug in a licensed game rather that having the slot directly on the back of the cartridge.

[27]***River City Ransom takes place in River City, where our heroes, Alex and Ryan, find a letter on Ryan's locker from a guy named Slick. The letter says that Ryan's girlfriend, Cyndi, has been kidnapped, and Slick has taken River City hostage with the help of countless gangs and evil bosses. It's up to our heroes to save poor Cyndi and free River City from the clutches of Slick and his underlings. You can play as Alex and take on the challenge alone or battle with two players simultaneously as Alex and Ryan. Kick and punch to fight your way through gang members, evil bosses and other goons, or use a variety of weapons including a chain whip, brass knuckles and a tire, to name a few. Raise your stats by eating right, and gain new techniques by reading books. With your fighting prowess and never-ending spirit, the bad guys won't know what hit them.***They take your girlfriend. You gotta get her back. A buddy helps you out. You walk around beating people senseless and taking their cash to get food and more techniques you learn via books.
The moral: Steeping on hostile truf usually attracts conflict and you can learn how to flail and turn into a ball if you read a book. Fun game even though it's not believable that your school would be that far away from you and they'd still kidnap your girlfriend instead of someone more important or closer, but yeah... fun game.
Ordering a smile in fast food restaurants was neat, so I started doing it in real life. Got different results. Heh.
[Pfilosophy]***Awesome game, one of my childhood classics. I remember I used to play this all the time with my brother. The only problem was writing down the password (to save your game). It was like a million characters long and case-sensitive. One mistake would cost you the game--god help you if you have bad handwriting. You definitely want to play this game with a friend, that's where this game really shines. RUN! RUN! I'M GONNA LOSE MY MONEY!
